Shubham Kumar achieved the All India Rank 1 after winning the 2020 UPSC civil services examination. The 24-year-old graduated from IIT Bombay with a degree in civil engineering. He claims to be from Katihar, Bihar, and that helping the less fortunate is his dream.



IIT Bombay alumnus Shubham Kumar placed first and was the 2020 UPSC Topper. Since he was little, he has excelled academically and was a brilliant student. Born in Kumheri village in Bihar, Shubham's mother is a homemaker and his father is a manager at a bank. At Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, his older sister works as a scientist. The path of Shubham Kumar serves as motivation for others who are discouraged by their setbacks. He kept trying till he succeeded, learning from his failures.


Education Background:-


  1. Shubham Kumar is an IIT Bombay graduate with a BTech in civil engineering. He was trained at the National Academy of Defence Financial Management (NADFM), Pune, for his third attempt at the UPSC exam. For his CSE, Kumar had chosen Anthropology as an optional subject.
  2. Shubham Kumar was a former researcher employed in the United States. He saw there were many holes in India during his time working as a scholar there, and he decided he wanted to contribute to his country's growth.
  3. Shubham Kumar claims that throughout his preparation, his father, a bank manager, always inspired him. He received ongoing assistance from his mother, a stay-at-home mom, and his older sister, a scientist at the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC).


As an IAS official, Shubham Kumar says he wants to concentrate on reducing poverty and fostering the growth of communities and their inhabitants. Since the IAS would provide him with a larger platform to work for the impoverished, particularly in rural regions, it was his dream job. Though he is amenable to different cadres, he favours the Bihar cadre.


On September 24, 2020, the UPSC released the results of the 2020 civil services examination. The final merit list comprised 545 men and 216 women out of a total of 761 applicants. There were 13 men and 12 women among the top 25 contenders. 

The top-ranked female candidate, Jagriti Awasthi, holds a B. Tech in Electrical Engineering from MANIT, Bhopal, and she ranks second overall.
