After passing the UPSC civil services test, aspirants can join the Indian Trade Service (ITS), a Group 'A' central service. In 1977, ITS services were launched. The Indian Trade Service (ITS) is managed by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT). Under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry is the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT). ITS's primary responsibility is to manage India's international trade and commerce.
The Mathur Committee's 1965 suggestions served as the foundation for the creation of the ITS. In 1986, the first group of ITS officers began serving.
- The Foreign Trade (Development and Regulation) Act, 1992, the ITC (HS) Classification of Export and Import Items, 2012, the Safeguard Measures (Quantitative Restrictions) Rules, 2012, the Foreign Trade Policy (FTP), 2009-2014, the Handbook of Procedure, Volume-I, 2009-2014, and the Handbook of Procedure, Volume-II (Standard) are all being implemented.
- Developing trade policies, negotiating trade agreements, and engaging in commercial diplomacy.
- advancing exports and carrying out trade regulations.
- The officials may also be assigned on deputation to work in other departments and ministries as well as for foreign institutions such as the World Bank Group, the Asian Development Bank, United Nations agencies, etc.
For its cadres, Indian Trade Service (ITS) provides an
excellent wage and a career ladder. Applicants must choose this Service if they
are interested in the trade and commerce industry.

- Training for Foundation Courses is available at all national academies, including LBSNAA.
- For eight to nine months, the Indian Institute of Foreign Trade (IIFT) in New Delhi will offer probationary professional training.
