Pondicherry Police Service

The Puducherry Police have roots in the years before 1954, when France was still a colony. At the period, separate units of indigenous (local) and armed police were kept.

During the French colonial era in Pondicherry, Yanam, Karaikal, and Mahé, India, two types of police officers were distinguished by the color of their kepis: the Armed and the Indigenous. The armed constabulary stood out due to its blue kepis, while the law and order troops were distinguished by their brilliant red caps. The vivid red kepi, worn by both local and armed police to symbolize the administrative and cultural legacies left behind, is still the headgear of the constabulary in Puducherry, the Union Territory that was formed out of the former French colonial territory after Indian independence.
