One of the Group "A" services alternatives accessible to applicants who pass the UPSC Civil Services Examination is the Indian Defence Estates Service (IDES). The main responsibility of the Defence Estates Organization (DEO), where IDES cadre officers are employed, is to oversee and manage the nation's defense land and cantonment civil issues.
Functions (IDES)-
- Managing the defence lands and administering the Cantonment Boards
- creating cantonments and guaranteeing universal access to health care, top-notch education for all kids, and a social care system for the aged, the disabled, and the less fortunate members of society.
- Carrying out a routine defense land survey.
- Obtaining, renting off, and seizing real estate for military uses.
- Carrying out routine defense land audits and disposing defence land
- Maintaining and updating accurate and digitised records of land.
- Preventing and eliminating unapproved building projects and encroachments on defense land.
- Handling litigation regarding ownership of defence land.
- Giving the Defence Ministry advice on issues pertaining to defence land and cantonments.
- Supervising the implementation of the Cantonments Act 2006.
