Bhawna Garg graduated in 1998 with a B Tech in Chemical Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur. Additionally, she finished her master's degree in public policy in 2012 from Princeton University's Woodrow Wilson School in the United States.

- Ratan Swarup Memorial Prize for outstanding overall achievement in all subjects across all undergraduate study programs at IIT Kanpur in 1998's graduating class.
- First place in the 1994 open competitive Combined Entrance Test, which was required to gain admission to engineering universities.
